What is It?

The winners of the last SlowBoat "What IS It?" quiz were GregP and Curt.  They correctly identified the small, light gray building spotted along the shores of Collins Inlet, near Killarney, as an ice fishing shack that had been hauled onto the shore for the summer.  We saw dozens of these shacks along the length of the channel--some are simple and some are quite elaborate.

Now for today's "What IS It?"  Yup, it's a boat.  The question is, What KIND of a boat?   What do you DO with a boat like this?  Be specific!  Winner gets a shout-out on the blog and a tacky postcard from our current location.

  1. Looks like some sort of garbage picker upper type boat. Or maybe a small dredge of some sort. Kind of hard to tell what that thing is on the front.

  2. Small roll-on, roll-off vessel for small cars, trucks to go ashore.

  3. It's a ferry. We have some of these on the Ohio River but most of them are not enclosed. (Steve Kerlin)

  5. It's a guess, but could it be used for transporting livestock?

  7. Wow, very creative ideas!

There IS such a thing as a floating weed whacker, check out the slide show at the bottom of this post: http://www.slowboatcruise.com/2010/07/slowboat-goes-for-train-ride.html

However, this boat is NOT a weedwhacker.

Hint: We saw several of these boats docked next to the chips truck formerly known as Mr. Perch in Killarney.

  8. It's a fishing boat that provides fish for Herbert Fisheries, formerly known as Mr. Perch. The large doors must be for net handling?

  9. DING DING DING! We have a winner!

These boats are called "fishing turtles," I assume because that's what their bulging steel hulls remind you of. Miles, shoot an email to my PSU address and let me know your snail mail address, and you will be the proud recipient of a tacky postcard.
